Give the gift of life at Christmas
Pearl arrived at Greyhound Rescue Wales aged 18 months, just after Christmas in 2010. She was so traumatised that volunteers had to lift her out of the car as she shivered uncontrollably and tried to curl up in a ball. A dog like Pearl needs the most loving of care, so she went straight into one of GRW’s special long-term foster homes.
Here she retreated to a small room at the back of the house, only venturing out when her foster carer left the house, leaving the door open for Pearl to access the garden. Over several weeks Pearl slowly gained confidence until one day she
finally dared to move into the rest of the house with her carer and her lurcher companion Millie.
Pearl progressed with baby steps over the next two to three years, bravely accompanying her foster carer and Millie on short walks but dragging them home again immediately if she was startled by a loud noise. It took a long time, but slowly and surely Pearl began to relax and learned to trust.
These photographs show Pearl today, an elegant and (mainly) relaxed greyhound, enjoying home comforts and the beautiful environment of the Gower Peninsula where she lives. She loves going out on walks with doggie friends and is her carer’s constant companion. Pearl’s life could have turned out very differently but thanks to the dedication of her long-term GRW foster carer and financial support from GRW’s Sponsor a Dog scheme she is enjoying the life she deserves.
To help another dog like Pearl, why not Sponsor a Dog as a Christmas present for a friend this year? They will receive a Christmas card from Pearl to say thank you and twice yearly updates from their sponsor dog.
